venue1THE GOODWOOD ANGLING CLUB was founded by a group of social angling friends who felt they would like to take on the league angler’s. And so in September 1967 a group of avid anglers met at Joe Simon’s house to plan their way forward. Those at the meeting were Joe Simon, Ossie Elliot, Hennie Visser, Koos Kriel, Dannie Jonker, Ampie van Greunen, Tommy Thompson, Tracey De Villiers and Syfie Douglas. During the meeting it was decided that using word of mouth and placing an advert in “Die Burger” Newspaper, would encourage fellow anglers to attend their first meeting. The meeting was held on the 29th November 1967 at the Goodwood Hotel.

From the outset Goodwood Angling Club became a formidable force by winning the then Saturday league 3 years in a row (1968/1969/1970).Their teams continued their winning streak by winning various competitions and sporting both Western Province Anglers as well as Springbok Anglers. The first Western Province Angler selected was Joe Simon (Chairman), followed by Hennie Visser (Club Captain) in 1970.Hennie then went on the captain the Western Province Team in 1972 and in 1976 obtained his Springbok Colours. John Vickerman (current Chairman) became Western Province Champion in 1972. The club boasts many Springbok Anglers from Johan van Greunen, Herman van Greunen, Richard Watson, Dennis Nel, Rodger Topless and Thom Nash, the Springbok team manager.

The club house was initially nicknamed “Die Glass Huis” and was located at the Goodwood Rugby Club. As a result of fundraising achieved by “Oom” Johnny Hugo land was purchased to build the club house where it has stood since 1990. The club house rightfully carries his name.

Over the years the Club House has continuously been upgraded and has grown from strength to strength, both financially and through membership, and is in essence the backbone of the club.
